Assalamualaikum and hello everyone~
So for food recommendation here at Lombok and Gili Air, honestly we didn't try out too many restaurant (due to our budget) kekeke. The one we went at Lombok were the ones recommended by Mas Wira, our travel guide.
P/s : this time, we don't travel to eat, we travel to relax and eat to survive, which explains why we went around to find the best deals for our food! hahah!
|| HALAL FOOD
Halal food can easily be obtained here in Lombok. This is due to most of the people here are Muslims, unlike Bali. But do be careful too, and ask the owner of the shop or request your travel agent to bring you to Halal food stalls only.
As for mas Wira, he's a Muslim so there's no problem with that :D
Gili Air is also filled with Muslims, there's even a mosque here, nearby our villa! But please note that there's a lot of foreigners here, which are non-muslims and some of these people own restaurant/villa. So please be aware of the restaurants you go as some restaurants serve pork and halal meat, but they use the same cookwares hehe.
Also, there are restaurants which sells halal food only, but serve beer (since there are lots of non-muslim travelers here especially from the west)
So, to be safe, just avoid eating at the place which sells beer and serve pork. Better safe than sorry guys!
|| LOMBOK - RM NADA ALAM NYAMAN
So our Lombok food experience was totally by Mas Wira, our guide. Some restaurant, erm,,, sucks. haha! But not all. There's only 2 restaurant that I was able to capture, and I only like one of them hehe.We ate Ayam Taliwang here, which is a must try if you go to Lombok. This restaurant uses chicks instead of grown up chicken, and the size is a bit bigger than quail birds. I honestly prefer grown up chicken as the meat is more tender.
The chicken is quite tasty and the chicken came with few options, whether normal, honey or spicy. But the side dish of the cucumber chili tasted kinda weird to us.

|| GILI AIR
So we stayed at Gili Air (click HERE for our itinerary), and our stay includes breakfast, and usually it's so much we don't even need to buy lunch! Since we really want to save money but eat good food, we cycle a lot just to find the good deals. The food average price here is around Rp 25,000 to Rp 40,000. There are also restaurants that provide seafood barbeque, but of course at a higher price.
1. Warung Banyuwangi
I ordered Lalapan Ayam (in Malaysia we call it "Ayam Penyet" but the sambal is a bit different) for first night and I was quite disappointed since I saw locals eating lalapan in the shop was given the cabbage & other vegetables HAHA (okay i love to eat fresh cabbages with sambal). Mine's only chicken, rice, tempe, cucumber and the sambal (chili paste). Maybe the locals add on the other veges and money kot haha. But like I said, you can't expect too much since the price is super cheap. But if you are just focusing on surviving, well, here's the place!
P/s: its's on the opposite side of coco mart, location on maps below yaaa!
photobombed haha
inside
ote ote (seriously they eat this with raw chilis!)

⭐ Pros : The cheapest food we could find!
This, everyone, by far, serve the best Lalapan Ikan we ever ate in Gili Air with a very reasonable price!
Third night at Gilir Air, we wanna try other restaurant and we go back and forth to see which one offers the best deals. This one caught our attention as the night before, my husband saw 2 western foreigners, eating there as if it was their last meal.
Their meal might seems really simple for "the best lalapan with reasonable price", but trust me, the fried fish was really, really delicious! It was savory, sweet, crunchy on the outside but super, super tender on the insides.
I mean, I totally recommend this warung as the owner is down To earth, friendly and full of manner besides the tasty fish.
We even went there again the next night to eat the lalapan hahah! Since it was rainy, we just sat at the tables waiting for the warung to open. We waited quite long, and was like, are they gonna open for business or not? And the owner was really shocked when he saw us outside when we wanna go to pray. Unfortunately, his wife was not feeling good and they don't open for that night.
But when we said it was our last night at Gili Air, they wanna prepare us food. But nooo. We didn't say yes since they close the stall for reason- she must be feeling really unwell and should get some rest.
But that's how we found the third place to eat!
Location: when arriving at the main jetty, just go straight. It's after the fancy pink shop, at your left side.

3. Waroeng Alam Damai
We went pass this restaurant on the day we cycle around the island and the restaurant seems so welcoming and calm. And after quite lost since Warung Nusantara is not open, here's where we headed.
The roads are quite dark here in Gili Air, except for the main roads, and this restaurant is in a middle of a pitch dark place. We would've run if we saw this kinds of stall in Malaysia HAHA (People usually tells haunted story of such place where there's food stall inside the forest and when you go again on daylight, it's actually not there haha!)
Since we keep repeat eating Lalapan, my husband asked the staff on what's special there (I still choose lalapan hahah!). Apparently, the curry there is so famous. So my husband decided to give it a try.
just look at the portions!
We didn't eat there and decided to takeaway the foods, as it was raining and we wanna pack our stuffs up (leaving the next day sob.. sob...). But still, the food was packed carefully and the portion is biiiiggg. And the lalapan includes cabbage (FINALLY!).
The curry tasted more like Masak Lemak Cili Api to us (a Malaysian food), but it's not bad at all.
(picture from Google)
As for the chili paste (sambal) of the lalapan, there are 2 types of sambal - cooked and raw ones. Heaven!
Do keep in mind that this restaurant puts quality on top of other stuffs. As they don't have a lot of staffs, the speed of them preparing the meals are not as fast as other restaurants. But hey, if you want your food fast, go to fast food restaurants lol.
Bonus: This restaurant offers free cooking class! Just inform the worker there and set your preference time!

4. Gili Gelato
Fancy some ice creams on the hot days at the beach? We really looove Gili Gelato! Besides the deicious taste of the ice cream, it offers variety of choices too!
It's available in both Gili Trawangan and Gili Air but I'm not sure about Gili Meno, though.
in Gili Trawangan
You can get a plate of Lalapan with that rice, but once in a hile- why not!
You can taste the ice cream first before purchasing. I really love the coconut and Caramel, but decided to go for Coconut and Strawberry flavor. Oh ya, the bubblegum flavor is delicious too!
@ Gili Air
Tadaah!

5. Bakso
What's the point of going to Indonesia without trying their original Bakso? I mean, you could go to the best place in your hometown for Indonesian Bakso but seriously, of course you have to taste the authentic one from Indonesia!
We got ours from a food cart here, nearby the jetty. And the broth actually doesn't look as dark as in the picture, but we added some sweet soy sauce in it, and a little chili since we're always up to the spicy challenge!
The chili paste was super spicy though but it completes this dish called Bakso!
