SOKOR TRIP DAY 3 : BUKCHON HANOK, GWANGHWAMUN, MYEONGDONG

February 21, 2018

Assalamualaikum and Hi, Everyone!

So on our third day, we went to few places, as we were busy moving in and out of our hotel to guesthouse. It was a good thing considering our guesthouse in Itaewon was super comfortable and warm. The first one was good, but the only thing that heats us in our room was a small heater. That was the only thing that the hotel was lacking because I love the room and there were even bath tub! (well tbh, who cares about the bath tub when it's winter? no, not me HAHA)

The bad thing about moving hostels was it was time consuming and I hate that. haha!

Okay off to our third day in SoKor!

The weather was so cold we can barely walk, so forgive me if I don't share much things as other bloggers (it was our first time experiencing winter!). But I will dedicate a post to share some very useful tips, especially to those who will experience winter for the first time. Wish me luck HAHAHA

UNDERSTANDING SUBWAY IN SEOUL

January 21, 2018

Hello & Assalamualaikum everyone!

I went to my first overseas vacation last week and I got lots of things to share with you guys! And yes, I do realize that there are lots of things I should've done, too. Some of it might sound really dummy, like why the hell didn't I do that? But experience IS the best teacher. And since I can't let you guys experience it with me, the least I can do is to remind (or warn haha!) you guys, right?

on our way to Bukchon Hanok Village

I actually planned lots of trips. But plan remains plans LOL. since the friend I did my planning with suddenly wanna get married, suddenly can't go, suddenly didn't reply when I'm hunting for the tickets. You know, shit happens a lot while planning 😉. Betullah orang kata, plan 10 orang tak semestinya sorang pon datang, wahahaha

So my first trip is South Korea. We stayed in Seoul and Jeju Island altogether for a week. But trust me, it's not enough!

I went there with my friend. And there were only 2 of us. I will break down our expenses in another post but today I wanna talk about subway in Seoul.

||  THE SUBWAY

Living in Johor Bahru doesn't require me to use subway. I mean, is there even subway stations here? (I mean, there are trains to Singapore & other states in Malaysia from JB. But is there any subway station to go to nearby places like in KL? hahaha let me know if there actually is 😃😃).

I used subway once when in KL with my friend, and we got lost a lot bahahaha. But since there are lots of good reviews about subways in SoKor (South Korea), so yeah, we choose subway!

The subways are mostly undergrounds, which explains why there are so many underground shopping centers in Seoul. Here is the map of the subway in Seoul (since I use subway in Seoul only):

I don't understand a thing when I first saw this. well, don't blame me because I used subway once before. Tu pon folo je member g mana hahaha. But no worries, I will explain the maps to you!

  • Colors : For ease of use, the subway lines are marked in different colors
  • Lines: Notice that there are numbers at end of each subway lines? That's the subway line number. For example, when you google "how to go to A" and the results shows "from subway Line 1, take subway Line 2", this is what they mean.
  • Payment: for payments, they use T-money (just like Touch n' Go in Malaysia). Some lines like Arex from Incheon Airport to Seoul Station requires you to purchase the ticket at counter but the seats are more comfortable compared to normal subways (plus free wifi!).
  • T-Money: if you ran out of T-money balance, there are always machine at subway stations where you can reload your T-money. Worry not, you can change the language as there are many languages available (English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean)
  • Time: the trains run frequently from 0530 until midnight.
  • Subway Lockers: Most subway stations are equipped with lockers, and there will be a counter at most of subway stops so feel free to ask the staffs.

|| APPS I USE

I asked a lot and thank God, I met a girl named Ili on plane. It was her second trip to SoKor, so I asked her about the apps she used. It's Subway Korea and it's super easy to use. The best thing about this apps is you can use it offline!

the app. Malang tak berbau LOL

First, choose your start point. I choose Seoul Station as my start point.
So, click Seoul Station > Departs from

And lets say I want to go to Gangnam.
Just click Gangnam > Arrives at

And it will show you this!

Notice that the top of the app will show you the approx time of the journey and the bottom green is the approx fare. Bawah sekali yang muka perempuan tu iklan. maklumlah, guna apps tak mau bayar ha ha ha.

The yellow dot on the map is where you have to get off the train and change line. Remember I explain about subway lines earlier? Okay the first orange dot is at Chungmuro and the subway you will take is the blue color (Line 4) Drop off at Chungmuro, find & follow the directions to line with orange color (Line 3). Drop off at Seoul National Univ of Education and transfer to Green line (Line 2).

If you're confused on which line to take, just click at the orange dot and choose "Station Info".

It will show you this and even the facilities available at the subway stations! As for lockers, I guess you still have to ask the staffs at the subway stations, or just ask locals. 😉

|| BE PREPARED

Subways in Seoul are quite punctual, but shit do happens. There was once when the train suddenly patah balik (go to the opposite direction) as we weren't aware of the announcement. Sometimes the train stop and ask you to transfer to another train as there are some technical issues, and there was once when the train stop and we waited so long for the next train to arrive. But that's what backpacking is about- experience. There are few ahjusshis who tried to talk to us but sadly, we're not that fluent in Korean language. Well, I can speak some gibberish Korean but I don't know every word. I apologized to the uncles for not being able to talk in Korean but he apologize back because he don't know english. And when we went seperate ways, the ahjusshi waive his hand and said "Bye bye!". Ahjusshi so cute 😂

There are few seats with some notes on the backside & some with pink seat covers. Do not seat at those seats as it is reserved for the elders, and pregnant woman. If not, people will stare at you with laser stare bahahaha!

This will involves massive walking lagi-lagi kalau korang nak change subway lines. And on peak hours (usually when people get to & from work), be prepared to see people running here and there, and even ahjumma run gila2 kejar subway tau!

Young people can speak English, but not school kids. But they will try to help you if they can. Halmoni & Haraboji will just speak Korean as if u understand them, with hands pointing here and there (so cute!!).

There will be free internet in subway stations and the speed is quite okay. Just don't expect too much from that and please don't waste your time roaming. Just buy the local sim card and you will get free wifi everywhere from sim provider.

For better ways, search for directions from home, screenshot and dump the screenshots in a folder, so you can just refer it back!

Till then,
Thank you for reading this entry!

IT ROO CAFE | FOR CHICKEN CHOP FREAKS

October 29, 2017

Assalamualaikum and hello everyone!

I was craving for some great food, to be exact- lamb chop. I honestly don't eat lamb before, but my friends persuaded me to try and sorta have a taste of what they eat- nasi arab kambing, satay kambing, kambing panggang, and everything kambing lah! And yeah, I love kambing, thanks to them!

And sometimes terbawa-bawa sampai malas mandi macam kambing HAHAHA.

meet my fav lamb chop!

Back to the story- I was craving for some lamb chop and I wanna go out and take pictures of the surrounding. You know, amik feel as if I am a tourist (Amik feel tu penting okehhhhh!). So I thought of Jalan Dhoby, JB. There are some beautiful street arts, and lots of nice cafes too! So lamb chop eh, let me think.... IT ROO CAFE!

Someone should make a Harry Potter wall art here at Jalan Dhoby. Because, Dobby sounds like Dhoby. You know what I mean? #POTTERHEAD

||   THE CAFE

I have been here for several times in the past few years. But the best thing about this cafe, is the taste of the food. It remains the same- always delicious! This cafe is known for the chicken chop, best chicken chop in town they say. The first time I came here, I was clueless. "This cafe looks like some place from the past though", was the only thing I thought of. I didn't even know this "the best chicken chop in town" thing. Then I ordered Beehoon tomyam. Well, it was just the normal beehoon tomyam. But my friend ordered Chicken chop, and it was awesome. Damn awesome beb!

Another time, was with my chinese friend. She knows that I love to try out new cafes so she said that I will surely be happy if she bring me to this place, I just know that it was It Roo when I arrived. My friend was quite disappointed because she wanted to surprise me but I've been there hahah. And like I said, the food never disappoint me.

This cafe is so popular among locals and Singaporeans too! The parking lot is limited but there are parking spaces behind Masjid India nearby. So, it's really no problem. Also, the bazar karat is just around the corner, but it only opens at night.

This cafe existed for years, and is still packed with customers. I went after the lunchtime on Saturday. there are a few empty tables, but it was packed again not long after I arrived!

welcome to the past!

||  THE FOOD

As usual, it was so delicious. The potato wedges are the real potato, not the frozen one you buy in supermarkets. The coleslaw is so fresh and juicy, the black pepper sauce is perfect and the lamb is super tender. Super tender I tell you.

You will be served with some peanuts once seated . I was like "Uuuuu service diaaaaa!", then I changed my mind when I saw the bill. Peanuts tu bukan service laaaaa, worth RM 2.00 lagi kau. HAHAHAHA. I never paid before, always my friend pay, my boss pay. Now only I know ðŸ˜‚😂😂

I ordered lamb chop and watermelon juice. There's nothing special with the juice, honestly.

licinnnnn! but I find it weird to eat with cucumber, macam makan satay pulak keke

Some people say that the food is quite pricey. But honestly, I dont think so. Why? even nasi goreng mamak is RM 6.50 nowadays (ke RM 7.00 ek?). The taste was far from so-so plak tu kan.

Overall, I rate this cafe :
5 stars for the service, there are so many people but the service is so fast!
4.9 stars for the food- it was tasty, fresh and great!

Will I come again?
DEFINITELY YES! for the lamb chop and chicken chop.

Will I recommend this place?
Yes, for the chicken chop & lamb chop. You can try other food, but these 2 are the ones I recommend. The food is great. Even though the cafe is not insta-friendly (no pretty walls like other hipster cafe), but the food definitely is. Worth every penny.

Oh, remember the "SMILE" wall art i posted on the previous post? It was just beside this cafe!
