DOOKKI JOHOR BAHRU | REVIEW

February 7, 2020

Assalamualaikum eberibadiii~

Kemain.

Okay so I found out about a new halal Tteokbokki restaurant in Johor Bahru through my friend and the interesting thing about this restaurant is the tteokbokki is served in buffet style! I mean, not only you get to eat tteokbokki, but you can also choose what kinds of stuffs you want inside your tteokbokki too, with unlimited refills HAHAH (gelak jahat)

Okay so for those who don't know what tteokbokki is, it's a spicy stir fried rice cake. If you watch K-dramas, they usually stop at a stall tepi jalan lagi2 bila musim sejuk and eat tteokbokki while chit chatting.

I didn't get to eat tteokbokki when I was in Korea, because I was usually full and often times I doubt about the halal status & ingredients used by the street stall. haha. more reason to go back there sebab now there's a halal tteobokki stall nearby itaewon mosque 🤣🤣🤣

||     THE RESTAURANT

Dookki is a franchise restaurant originated from South Korea and currently have over 140 outlets all over the world. There are currently 2 Dookki restaurants in Malaysia, which are in IOI City Mall Putrajya and R&F Mall, Johor Bahru.

Oh in case you're wondering- Dookki means 2 meals in Korea, because there are steps in eating buffet here :
1st : start with tteokbokki
2nd: finish your tteokbokki and use the leftovers to make fried rice

but... if you're still hungry,
you can have ramen and other snacks like fried chicken and kimbap too!

I really love the ambience and the self service counter, because the instructions given on the guide is also really easy to understand. Since this is a buffet restaurant, it's self-service and you can take whatever you want in any portion you want from the self service counter.

But worry not, the staffs there are so helpful and if it's your first time there and don't know how to make the broth of the tteokbokki, the staffs will happily guide you and help you serve. Oh, did I mention that you can even customize the tteokbokki broth here?

||     THE MENU

This buffet is all-you-can-eat but the time given is only 90minutes. Once we arrive, the staff explain to us on the menu and price, and they will remind you when the time's almost up.

And, 90minutes is actually really okay. Not too short but not too long too. The menu here is simple, which includess tteokbokki, fried rice, ramen, kimbap and fried snacks (fried chicken, fried dumplings and fried kimbap rolls) too.

Price is as shown below :

and Penalty RM20 if you can't finish your food yaaa

||     EATING GUIDE

Haaaa, siap ada guide hahah!

Okay so first, the staff will give you the plain base broth, which is made with anchovies and kelp. then, here are the steps:
1. Go to the self service station and take the tteokbokki sauces, depending on your preference. There's a guide there, just refer it.

2. Mix the sauces with the broth
3. In a big bowl served, put vegetables, fish cakes, meats / seafood and lastly, the rice cakes. (don't forget green onion and fish cake skewers ya!) . You can also add ramen if you want.
4. Toss everything in the tteokbokki broth, wait for the rice cake to become really soft and eat. Take food at the fried chicken counter too and enjoy!

5.  With the remaining tteokbokki broth (jangan banyak sangat kalau tak nasi lembik gila), go to the self service counter and take ingredients for fried rice (Kimchi, ham, corn and seaweed). You can add more spicy sauce if you want.
6. Mix them up and taadah! it's your own Korean Kimchi fried rice~

||     THE FOOD

Okay so we thought tteokbokki obviously use only 1 type of tteok (rice cake), which we often see in K-dramas. But it's not! There are many types of rice cakes which includes the cheesy and even yam rice cake! My husband and his friend love the yam one, but I prefer the usual plain and the cheesy ones.

There are fried chicken counter which offers fried dumplings, spicy fried chicken, snowy fried chicken, fries, fried kimbap rolls and some kind of fried balls.

We didn't bother taking any ramen because we were super full haha. If there's any advice I should give to you guys, it's don't take too much tteokbokki because it's super duper filling.

Rasa kenyang dia, tak macam rasa kenyang bila ko makan benda lain. Perit gak lah wei sebab rice cakes to smua mcm mengembang dalam perut. I can't describe the feeling hahaha

||     HALAL STATUS

The restaurant does not have halal certificate yet, but all meat and ingredients are sourced from halal-certified suppliers and no alcolhol in the ingredients used. They also practice no pork, lard and alcohol. You can refer post from Have Halal Will Travel (HHWT) HERE.

As for the packet ramyen, I forgot to check the halal logo since we didn't even take any (we were too full!). But this restaurant didn't even serve alcoholic beverages. Because last time I went to Kyochon JB, the workers are muslim (ramai k), and they claim that even though they didn't have halal jakim but they are "committed to it" while there's a fridge full of alcoholic drinks and beers for customers inside the restaurant. =.=

the one in thermos is hot barley tea

If you're worried, just wait for them to apply halal Jakim ya. As for me, I trust review from HHWT website and the restaurant doesn't serve alcohol too, proving that they strictly follow their policy.

||     THE REVIEW

Disclaimer - I'm not sponsored so my reviews here are honest ya
⭐ 4.8 Overall
⭐ 4.8 for food. the ingredients are fresh, and the varieties are suprisingly a lot.
⭐ 4.8 for staff. All staffs are helpful and serve us with a smile. they even remind us politely when our time's almost up.
⭐ 4.8 for the ambience
⭐ 4.8 for the price. Its quite reasonable.
Will I come again : I'm not sure, muak makan haritu tak habis lagi hahahah. Seriously, don't take too much rice cakes if youre planning on to eat full course (including ramen, fried rice, fried chicken & other snacks), sebab it's really filling.
And the feeling is unlike when you're full of other food. I guess maybe because the rice cake "expand" in our stomach? or maybe it's just us not used to eat this kinds of food (rice cakes), so the full you feel is different, and weird, and kinda painful hahah!

  1. Nice writing and photos! Been wanting to try this out since their opening day but was a bit 'chicken' to try new thing and now i would absolutely go and experience myself

  2. I tried once but the chicken was very tiny and when I asked the staff, he said its imported. He could not provide the info about the suppliers of the chicken. Was a bit perplexed then. Although I agreed with your ratings, I would not patron this outlet until they are halal certified.
